Let's rewind all the way back to 2011. I was working at Sam's Club as a cashier while finishing up my undergraduate degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Little did I know at the time, that the new cashier I was training would one day become my wife! Apryl and I clicked immediately. We ended up talking in the parking lot for a couple hours with another coworker one night after our shifts were over. After that night, the three of us became great friends and did everything together over the next couple of years. Whether it was late night trips to the Oklahoma casinos, a night at the bingo hall (yes, we're old souls who enjoy bingo!), going out to eat, or just hanging out, we were always together.
I finished my Masters degree at SMU in 2012 which is when Apryl began her studies at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, TX. We both left Sam's Club that year but still kept in touch... for at little while that is. We lost touch and I didn't hear from her for a little over three years! Then out of the blue, I got a Facebook message from Apryl saying "Hey stranger! Haven't talked in a while. How's it going?!?!" This was one of those moments that will be forever stuck in my mind. I remember exactly where I was, what I was doing, and how I felt. We continued to talk online for a few months then finally decided to grab lunch one day. It was like no time had passed at all. We picked up right where we left off. On a side note, we recently looked back at the date Apryl sent me that message and it happened to be April 25, 2017. Freaky or what?!?
We continued to see more and more of each other over the next few months. I remember I was helping Apryl at an event she held for her crafting business when I finally worked up the courage to ask her to make our relationship official. I, of course, pulled out all the stops by picking up McDonalds for us on my way to the event. You know what they say...Chicken McNuggets are the way to a girl's heart (or at least my girl's heart!).
Long before Apryl and I started dating, I had planned a solo cruise for the Summer of 2018. Since I now had a wonderful person to share it with, I ended up asking Apryl if she wanted to go with me. Of course, she said yes. In the months leading up to the cruise, I knew that Apryl was the one. And what could be better than proposing on a cruise or on the beach somewhere, right? I thought I had it all planned out until the week before we left. What if she found the ring in my suitcase, what if I lost the ring, what if she knows I'm proposing on the cruise? Well, a little birdy told me that that Apryl knew of my plans so I ended up changing everything at the last minute. We had a family dinner at Apryl's Grandparent's house where we invited my family as well as all of Apryl's. She had no clue. She just thought it was a dinner where my family could meet her family. After sweating bullets throughout the entire dinner, the moment finally arrived and I pulled Apryl aside while our family gathered around us and I popped the question. Needless to say, she was very surprised. She said yes and we set sail the very next week to celebrate our engagement. We returned 7 days later and the wedding planning started immediately!
